We’ve been living at the Library this summer. Our children’s
librarian extraordinary, Anne Vantran, has hooked up great programming
for the kids. Last week it was a traveling show on chemical reactions
from the Museum of Science in Boston. The

kids had a chance to change ph, learn about how moisture changes things
and how stomach acid works. The instructor used common household items
like vinegar and hydrogen peroxide to do experiments. The audience also
got the chance to volunteer. Four children stood up to help the
instructor describe an example of a molecule of hydrogen peroxide
becoming a water molecule. Each child was an atom of the molecule. It
was a great learning experience. His biggest lesson? The best
science starts with curiosity and that you never have to be afraid of
being wrong.
Kim Gleason played in her first 18-hole golf tournament at
Crosswinds in Plymouth last weekend and hit a hole in one on the 17th
hole! She also had two birdie putts to lead her team to a one stroke
win in her family’s annual outing. Her teammates, which included her
dad, Dick Gleason and her uncle, Scott Ridder, were
completely shocked, as was the whole club. Kim took lessons last year
at Ridders for a week and has gone to the driving range, but never had
played on a course. I bet Kim’ll save that ball and scorecard forever.
Congrats Kim, that’s awesome!
A big hello to our local Rotarians, Bruce Marquis of Salon Esprit and Red Brittain
from Brittain Trucking, both of which also live in town. They
worked with the Rotary Club of the Bridgewaters to display its Shelter
Box project in the Bridgewater Fourth of July parade. The Shelter
Box Trust provides emergency aid for victims of natural and other
disasters anywhere in the world since 2001. Each unit contains a one
ten person tent, thermal blankets, insulated ground sheet, wood burning
stove or multi-fuel stove, cooking pans, cooking utensils, towels,
mugs, collapsible water containers, water purification tablets, basic
tool kits, and a small children’s pack of educational supplies.
Further information can be found at www.shelterbox.org. They have
helped an estimated 500,000 people and worked in 73 disasters in 43
countries responding to earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tsunamis,
wars, and volcano eruptions. The Rotary Club of the Bridgewaters
is part of Rotary International, which is a service organization for
men and women who are dedicated to international, national, as well as
local service and humanitarian projects.

And I leave you with a quote from Robert Redford: “I don’t know what
your childhood was like, but we didn’t have much money. We’d go to a
movie on a Saturday night, then on Wednesday night my parents would
walk us over to the library. It was such a big deal, to go in and get
my own book.”
