Musings

If you worry today about yesterday you worry tomorrow about today. Reminds me of the proverb: Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

Greg Baggett broke up Norwell’s bid for a no-hitter and scored the first run for Post 22. In their final game he added an RBI double and scored another run against Dennis.
Whitman American Legion Post 22 baseball kept their postseason hopes alive with wins over Norwell and Barnstable, but a Brockton win on Sunday eliminated the team from playoff contention before their final game on Monday against Dennis. Post 22 dropped the finale 7-4 to finish the season with a record of 8-11-1.

Post 22 never recovered from a 2-7-1 start to the season despite going 6-4 in the second half.

“The first half was a whole new team because we lost 10 guys [from last season],” Head coach Chuck Adams said. “I think that played into it, but now, they’re comfortable with each other.”

Whitman still had an outside chance of making the postseason thanks to a 6-4, come-from behind win over Norwell on Friday.

“They were a hungry young team and they really wanted to beat us,” Adams said. “They knew we were competitors last year and they really played hard.”

John Bilunas pitched a complete game victory against Barnstable and added a two-run home run at the plate.
Norwell touched starter Jake Ruoff for three runs in the first inning while their pitcher held Post 22 hitless until a Greg Baggett single in the top of the fourth. Ruoff then tripled in Baggett to cut into the Norwell lead and then tied the game with his second triple in the sixth inning.

Ruoff then scored on a suicide squeeze by Anthony Lambiase to give Whitman their first lead of the game, but Norwell picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the inning to tie the score again. Whitman put the game away in the top of the seventh with a two-run single by Beau Barnes and Ruoff set Norwell down in the bottom frame for the complete game win.

Whitman followed the 6-3 win over Barnstable behind John Bilunas’ complete game on the mound and two-run home run at the plate. Ruoff had an RBI and a run scored and Bill Collins scored twice while Anthony Glynn led the way offensively with three hits and 2 RBI.

Baggett had an RBI double and a run scored for Whitman in the final game, but a four-run Dennis first inning was too much for Post 22 to overcome at the high school on Monday.

Despite missing the playoffs, Adams said he was pleased with the second-half turnaround from his club and says it bodes well for next season with most of the team returning.

“We’ve got a good nucleus of kids and we’re going to be trying to recruit some more pitchers and be competitive,” he said. “The young guys played hard, the pitching is starting to come through and I think we are going to be very, very competitive next year.”
