Musings

Some folks who are too lazy to think spend too much time reading. Reminds me of something the French writer Joubert said: ÒThe worst thing about new books is that they keep us from reading the old ones.Ó

Keeper Warren MacCallum makes a diving stop on a Rockland player.
Whitman United had a huge, 2-0, victory against Rockland Monday night in Whitman in a battle between the top two teams in the Champions Division of the Old Colony Mens Soccer League.

The United gained an early lead in the game against, a ten member Rockland squad. Nick Celia placed a well received pass from Alloe in the upper left corner to beat the Rockland goalie only 4 minutes in the half. The pressure continued from a skilled United team. Jeffery Dunn and Celia played several dangerous balls into Rockland’s 18 yard box for Mike Ford and John Golden. The duo upfront challenged the Rockland keeper during the half. Golden earned end line on a running pass. He managed to cut the ball back at an angle and lay a pass at the 12 yard spot for an on running David Floeck. The Rockland goalie came up with a huge save off of a rocket from Floeck. A shorthanded Rockland began to pull an offside trap to control the speed of the United offense. Despite their efforts, United’s forwards were able to prevail. In the 42 minute of play, Golden held off a Rockland defender after receiving a pass from Ford. Sal LoGrasso ran through the box and popped a lay off from Golden right over Rockland’s goalie. The half ended with Whitman ahead by two goals.

After gaining a player, Rockland played eleven strong to start the second half. With new wind, Rockland had several opportunities that they placed just wide of the net in the first minutes of the half. Whitman would answer back and Alloe would miss a walk-in that was rebounded by Golden who put the ball straight into the keeper’s arms. With an even eleven on the pitch, Rockland began challenging Whitman goalie, Warren MacCallum. Coming up with three huge saves off a Rockland firing squad, MacCallum kept Whitman in the lead. Then Whitman had several missed opportunities, three of which were breakaways on Rockland. All came up short.

Then, 35 minutes into the half a Rockland played went in cleats up on a tackle. The referee issued him a Yellow Card. Three minutes later, the same player would tackle Floeck from behind and after a scuffle of both teams, would be issued a Red Card, taking him out of the rest of the match. With minutes left, the game would end with United ahead by 2 goals.

With the win, Whitman clinched a spot in the tournament phase of the Old Colony League. They will be in action against next Monday against East Bridgewater FC.
