Tim Norton (26) and Cory Burtman (28) watch a two-run home run sail out of the park with two outs in the seventh inning to give Braintree a 3-2 lead on Sunday.
Three losses in three days to the Braintree White Sox brought and end to the South Shore Warriors’ hopes of qualifying for the Stan Musial Tournament.

After dropping both games of a double header in Hanson 3-2 and 4-0 on Sunday, the Warriors needed a win in Braintree on Tuesday to keep pace with Canton for the fifth and final spot in the tournament, but lost 5-0 to the White Sox and were eliminated from contention.

Nick Peters pitched Tuesday for the Warriors and got into trouble in the second inning when Braintree went up 1-0 thanks to a walk and a wild pitch. With two outs in the third, Braintree made it 2-0 with a home run and added three more in the fifth, also with two outs.

While head coach John Pesente admitted his team made mistakes early in the field, he said the biggest reason the team didn’t make the post season was their lack of offense. A single by Michael Bradley and a double by Marc Doyle were the only hits of the day for South Shore.

“We’ve had about 20 [straight] innings without a run,” he said. “We had pretty good defense and pretty good pitching, but we just couldn’t hit.”

David O’Brien got the loss on Sunday, but still finished the season with an ERA of 1.62 and could wind up as Rookie of the Year.
The toughest loss of the three games for the Warriors was the first game of the double header on Sunday. Nate Weber led off the fourth inning with a single, stole two bases and scored on a line drive by Cory Burtman to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. But Braintree tied the game in the top of the sixth when Dave O’Brien hit a batter who would come around to score on a wild throw to third base by Bradley.

Bradley redeemed himself in the bottom of the inning by putting South Shore ahead again with a double that scored Weber and made it 2-1 Warriors, but with two outs in the top of the seventh, a Braintree batter homered with a man on to give the White Sox the lead and the win.

“That took the heart out of us,” Pesente said.

While the Warriors will wrap up their season on Thursday, O’Brien, Burtman and Weber will join teammates Jeff Sarahs and Derek Miller at the Cranberry League All-Star Game in Brockton on Monday.

Sarahs and O’Brien both finished the season with earned run averages under 2.00 and are both in the running for annual awards with O’Brien a finalist for Rookie of the Year and Sarahs for Pitcher of the Year.

‘They were both outstanding,” Pesente said. “Every game they pitched, they pitched well.”

Burtman and Miller were also rookies to the team this season and Pesente said their presence in the outfield made a big difference from last year’s club.

“They both played very well defensively and hit in the .290’s,” said Pesente. “They both were solid and they deserve to be on the team.”

Weber, who is the ranking veteran on the team, turned in another solid season by leading the team in most offensive categories as well as playing stellar defense.

“He only made one error at shortstop all year,” Pesente said. “He led the team in hitting and RBI and just about every other category. He had a phenomenal year.”

While Pesente said he expects a little turnover next season, he is hoping that most players will return with another year of experience under their belts, making the Warriors a playoff contender again next season.

“A lot of times, pitchers will stay one year and move on to another league, but I’d like to get all our pitchers back,” he said. “I think most of the Whitman-Hanson kids will be back and Nate will be back so we’ll try to be better next year.”
