At least one area town is looking to close its town hall on Fridays as a way to save money, but that plan is unlikely to happen in Whitman and Hanson.
Town officials in Westport recently put forward a plan to close their town hall on Fridays and have employees work longer days throughout the week. According to Westport Town Administrator Michael Coughlin, the town could realize a 20 percent savings in energy costs by closing for three days instead of two, and town employees would save money on gas by driving to work one less day a week.
For the time being, Whitman and Hanson residents shouldn’t worry about finding their town hall doors locked on Fridays.
“We haven’t talked about it,” Whitman Selectmen Chairman Carl Kowalski said about a possible plan to scale back operations at Town Hall.
Kowalski noted that while Town Hall is open five days a week, the employees only work four days a week.
“Employees do save money on transportation costs that way,” Kowalski said. “We just don’t have the energy savings from closing one day a week.”
Whitman Town Hall is open Monday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In Hanson, plans to close the Town Hall on Fridays aren’t much more along.
“We’re running the numbers, just for the heck of it, but it isn’t a top priority,” Hanson Town Administrator Michael Finglas said.
Any changes at Town Hall would require a Town Meeting vote, Finglas said.
Currently, Town Hall is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon. Many of the town departments are staffed part-time and are not necessarily open every hour the Town Hall is open. On Fridays, department heads staff town departments.
