Whitman United hit the road and notched another victory for the season on Monday when they defeated Hanover 4-1.

The momentum started in Whitman’s favor when an early goal from Mike Quinn set the scoring pace for the game. Under five minutes into the half, Quinn placed a ball past the Hanover keeper for a quick lead. As the play continued, Whitman dominated their offensive end. They had numerous opportunities. Minutes after his first goal, Quinn beat two defenders inside the Hanover 18 yard box and missed a shot by inches. Then, in the 26 minute of play, Quinn popped a well placed pass, from David Floeck, over the Hanover keeper.

The United went into the second half with a two goal lead. Continuing throughout the start of the second, the team controlled the ball and made several chances for the Whitman offense. Nick Celia placed a ball across the box to an awaiting Jeffery Angelo, who put the shot in the back of the net.

Five minutes later, John Golden beat a sliding Hanover goal tender to give the United a growing advantage.

Off the kick-off, Hanover advanced down the field and took a distance shot that bounced in front of United tender, Warren MacCallum. The ball bounced over MacCallum’s head and was followed through by a Hanover forward, putting Hanover on the board.

The game continued on and Whitman played hard throughout the half. A frustrated Hanover began to become more vocal about the fouls and plays in the game. With 30 seconds left in the match, a Hanover midfielder was called for a foul and issued a red card.

United played well and were able to maintain composure and capitalize on their opportunities.

“We continued to play well in the midfield and the back, which allowed our offense to counter,” said Brendan Adams.

Next weekend, Whitman has a big test when they travel to Rockland for a showdown between the top two teams in the Champions Division of the Old Colony League.
