NUMBER 10 WITH A BULLET: Justin DeAndrade crashes into the Abington catcher scoring the first run of a three-run bottom of the seventh against Abington.
After spinning a complete-game shutout against Abington in the first game of a doubleheader at Stonehill on Sunday, Tim Cooney figured his day was over. He did not expect to come up a pinch hitter with two outs in the bottom of the seventh with the tying run 90-feet away.
Cooney then laced a double over the head of the Abington centerfielder that scored Andrew Foster from third base to tie the game and brought around Greg Mannke with the winning run as Hawkeye Athletic Club swept Abington in the double header 9-0 and 6-5, to move into third place in Zone 10.
“He had the icepack on his elbow for six innings and then came in and got the winning hit,” said head coach Rich Cogliano of Cooney.
Cogliano sent Cooney to the plate in place of the struggling Leo Finnegan at the request of Finnegan himself.
“Leo told me to pinch hit for him because he was having a rough day,” Cogliano said. “I usually don’t like to do that, I like to give a guy a chance. But we did it and it worked out.”
Hawkeye found themselves in a 5-3 hole after Abington tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh. But Justin DeAndrade led off the bottom of the inning with a single and Foster followed to put the tying runs aboard. With two outs, Mannke singled up the middle and DeAndrade collided with the Abington catcher at the plate, knocking the ball free and scoring to make it a one-run game. Cooney then followed with his double to complete the sweep of Abington.
Foster, who scored the tying run, scored four of the six runs in the game for Hawkeye from the two-spot in the order.
Andrew Foster scored four of Hawkeye’s six runs in their second win over Abington.
“He just keeps doing it for us at the top of the order,” Cogliano said, adding that Foster is one of the most versatile players on the team. “He’s fielding well and, when he pitches, he pitches well.”
A few of those runs were courtesy of Mike Dowd, who was 3-4 in the nightcap with a pair of RBI. Dowd was a nightmare for Abington all day Sunday, icing the win in the first game with a grand slam on a two-strike pitch.
“That thing is still going,” said Cogliano. “He’s one of the better hitters in our league and he keeps showing that every day.”
The two wins gave Hawkeye a record of 10-5-1 and their 21 points moved them past Hingham and into third place in the Zone 10 standings. Hingham, Hanover and Sandwich have been at the top of the standings all summer in Zone 10, but Cogliano said he thinks his team belongs among the elite in the league.
“We’ve beat two of those teams [at the top],” he said, referring to Hawkeye’s 3-1 over Sandwich on June 9 and their 4-0 win over Hanover on July 2. “So I like our chances.”
