One sign of middle age is wanting to see how long your car will last instead of how fast it will go.

Brian Jezard pitches for East Bridgewater in the top of the third.
The ten-year-old All Star baseball team coached by Michael Werra competed in the Jimmy Fund Little League Tournament last weekend against Middleboro and South Plymouth. This was the first All Star tournament of the summer and the boys finished with an impressive 3-1 record. Their first win was in the tournament on Thursday night against Middleboro with a final score of 18-3.
P.J. Walsh opened the game pitching for East Bridgewater with two quick strike outs. His infield backed him up with a throw out at first to end the top of the first with no runs.
The success of the game became apparent at the start of the bottom of the first inning. After making it to first base, Kyle Brew opened the game with the first of many steals to second. This was followed by back-to-back doubles by Walsh and Mike Werra. Werra’s hit allowed both Brew and Walsh to score to make it 2-0 East Bridgewater. Werra, Cory Zani and Jake Peterson scored the next three runs by stealing home, to make the score 5-0 East Bridgewater with only one out. With Kyle Bonenfant’s walk, a run scored and Middleboro made the first of many pitching changes. After fouling a ball into the opposing teams’ coaches and another setting off a car alarm, Cam Davis singled to drive in Conner Sullivan. His single was followed by a steal to second on a bad throw. Jonathan Astor batted in Bonenfant and Davis stole home. East Bridgewater batted a round before the end of the inning with the score 9-0 East Bridgewater.
The top of the second was quick with Peterson pitching. After two strike outs on six pitches, he walked only one batter before striking out the side and keeping Middleboro scoreless.
The bottom of the second started with six consecutive singles allowing for three runs to score. This was followed by Ryan Graham, Brian Jezard, and Peterson stealing home before the end of the inning.
Jezard took over on the mound for East Bridgewater. Middleboro scored twice, but the inning ended after two great catches, one at second for Walsh and the other at first by Zani.
The last three runs were scored in the bottom of the third by Ethan Miller, Werra, and Zani. Middleboro made their third and final pitching change and ended the inning with the score 18-2.
In the top of the fourth inning, Graham came in to pitch and struck out two players before Davis closed out the inning. Middleboro scored one more run before Werra made the game-ending catch. The game was called for mercy rule with the score 18-3 East Bridgewater.
The team played two more games in Middleboro, the first against Brockton South ending the game, 10-0 EB. The third win was against Brookfield which included an inside the park home run by Peterson, as East Bridgewater went on to win the game 11-1.
With this third win, the team qualified for the semifinals in South Plymouth on Sunday. The tournament ended for East Bridgewater with their loss against Lakeville 9-5.
“They all around played well, they hit and fielded well, I give them all credit.” said Werra when reflecting on the team’s work.
The Jimmy Fund Little League Tournament consists of teams which raise money to benefit the Jimmy Fund. The team that raises the most money receives Red Sox tickets. The fundraiser runs until August.
