Musings
In 1945 a computer at Harvard malfunctioned and Grace Hopper, who was working on the computer, investigated, found a moth in one of the circuits and removed it. Ever since, when something goes wrong with a computer, it is said to have a bug in it.
The team congratulates Mike Dowd after his second triple and David Pierce after his RBI.
After defeating state champs Brocton, Hawkeye Athletic Club dropped to 7-5-1 with losses against Hingham and Middleboro. Hawkeye AC lost 6-5 on Sunday against first-place Hingham and 11-3 on Monday against Middleboro.
“It was horrible,” said head coach Rich Cogliano when asked about the Middleboro game. He added that the only notable performance was Justin DeAndrades’s homerun.
Against Hingham, starter Tim Cooney got into trouble in the first inning, giving up a three-run homerun to right-center to put Hawkeye in a 3-0 hole after half an inning. In the bottom of the first, DeAndrade led off with a single past shortstop. Andrew Foster advanced DeAndrade to third with a single to center field, and Mike Dowd’s RBI double made it 3-1 Hingham.
After Hingham scored two runs in the top of the second, Hawkeye was down 5-1. Back-to back singles by Matt Newcomb and DeAndrade, and a walk, loaded the bases for Dowd. The catcher tripled to make it 5-4 Hingham going into the third inning.
Dowd continued his hitting streak with another triple deep into right field later in the game. David Pierce’s RBI brought Dowd home and gave Hawkeye their final run.
“The difference between this game and others is they hit early,” said Cooney who pitched all seven innings in the loss.
Despite the two losses, Hawkeye is still in the playoff picture in Zone 10 and occupies the seventh spot in the standings. After their game against Hanover on Wednesday, Hawkeye AC will take on Abington at Stonehill on Sunday.
