Whitman Police continue to investigate three separate robberies that occurred over the weekend and on Monday evening at local businesses.
According to Chief Christine May-Stafford, the first incident occurred at Wendy’s Restaurant, at the intersection of Auburn and Bedford streets on Saturday around 2 a.m.
Cashiers were held up at gun point by three individuals who were driving a gray Honda type motor vehicle. The individuals reportedly were at the drive up window and demanded cash from an employee, according to May-Stafford.
“The motor vehicle drove off west bound on Auburn Street toward Brockton,” added May- Stafford who confirmed a large sum of cash was taken.
“Officers responded to the scene, but were unable to locate the suspect vehicle.”
In a separate incident Whitman Police responded to Fleming’s Corner Store and Pie Shoppe on South Ave. at approximately 7:20 p.m., on Sunday, after receiving a call reporting a robbery.
“Upon arrival, officers spoke with the clerk who stated that a white male, approximately 6 feet tall and wearing a black shirt and black baseball hat had entered the store and approached the counter. The suspect threatened the clerk with a hypodermic needle and demanded money. The clerk complied and the suspect fled the scene on foot headed in a westerly direction. Plymouth County Sheriff Department- BCI was requested to process the scene. Officers scoured the area for the next hour or so but found nobody matching the description.”
Eileen Fleming, owner of the corner store, and pie shoppe confirmed that they had been robbed and that the clerk was “mentally shaken up by the incident but was physically unharmed.”
“They did get some cash,” added Fleming, who has been in the busy location for over fourteen years.
“We have had this occur in the past and we have a state of the art video surveillance system that will definitely assist the police in their search.”
Fleming confirmed the clerk had seen the hypodermic needle, which was laid out on the counter by the thief. She added, “He demanded money and the clerk obliged.”
Monday evening just prior to 9 p.m. Dunkin Donuts at 811 Bedford St. was robbed by a man described to be in his mid- twenties. The suspect, who fled on foot, was wearing a dark baseball hat, dark pants, a gray sweatshirt with the word “Cowboys” on the front and white sneakers.
The suspect reportedly fled down Star St. A K-9 was called in from Plymouth County Sheriffs Department and after a perimeter search, including several residential addresses, police were not able to locate the suspect. Police were able to obtain images of the suspect through video surveillance in the store. The unarmed robber demanded cash from the clerks and did not show or refer to a weapon. He did get away with an undetermined amount of cash, according to officials. There were no injuries resulting from the incidents.
