Janet Dempsey had three first place finishes and one second place in Whitman-Hanson's double win.
The Whitman-Hanson girls track team rebounded from the first dual meet loss last week with a pair of league wins in Marshfield on Tuesday. The Panthers bested the Rams 76-60 while beating Nauset Regional 120-16.

“We really needed this,” said head coach Mike Driscoll. “Last week was a tough week for us all and to bounce back from the D-Y loss and come up with a win was huge.”

Sophomore Janet Dempsey, who had three first-place finishes and a second place at the meet, led the Panthers. Dempsey won the long jump with a career best 156” and won the triple jump and 300 hurdles before placing second in the 400-meters with another personal best.

“Janet was unbelievable today,” said Driscoll. “She stepped up in a big way and is really coming into her own, the best part is she is only a sophomore.”

Senior Alyssa Eich had two wins for the first time her high school career with wins in both the discus and javelin with a career best in the latter. Also in the field events, Ally Tully won the high jump while Brittany Durant got a personal best of her own on her way to victory in the shot put.

On the track, Kaylee Mienkiewcz won the 100 hurdles while setting a new freshman record in the event with a time of 17.5 seconds. Jill Alves remained unbeaten in the 800-meters this spring with a time of 2:22, 1.4 seconds off her own record time. Currently Alves is the only Lady Panther to ever run under 2:23 in the 800.

The track team also had numerous personal bests at the Andover Invitational on Saturday.

Jill Alves is looking to add the 4x400 record to her list of accolades this season.
Emily Migre was the only Panther to crack to top six in an event with a sixth place finish in the javelin, but senior Nicole Affannato had two season bests in the long and triple jump.

On the track, the four Panthers ran personal best times. Sophomore Marissa D’Angelo beat her previous best in the 800-meters by three seconds with a time of 2:26. Three Panthers recorded their best times in the mile run, led by Emily Regan with a 5:37 followed by Caitlin Ryan and Kelci Sullivan.

The 4x100 team of Mary Rose Griffin, Taylor Ferry, Rachel Kennedy and Jenn Mahoney also ran their best time of the season in the relays.

Dempsey, Alves, Tully and Kasey Larsen all sat out their individual events to try and break the school record in the 4x400 relay at the meet. The team finished with a time of 4:14, 1.3 seconds behind record pace. As the team gets set for the Class B relays at Dennis-Yarmouth on Saturday, Driscoll said the 4x400 will be even more motivated to run into the record books.

“[They] are determined to break that record,” he said. “They have to work hard.”
