Darren Cundari ran neck and neck with a D-Y sprinter but edged his Dolphin opponent to win the 100-meter dash event for the Panthers on Tuesday.
Tyler Morgan and Noel James set new school records as the Panthers opened up league play with wins over Plymouth South (114-22) and Sandwich (123-13) last Wednesday and Dennis- Yarmouth (112-24) and North Quincy (110-26) on Tuesday to improve to 5-0 on the season.
At the Plymouth South/ Sandwich meet, Morgan broke the previous school record in the javelin by almost 10 feet with a toss of 174’6” surpassing the old record of 165’.
The school record is well deserved,” said head coach Kevin Black. “Tyler has set his sight on becoming the best possible javelin athlete he can be. He has become a student of the event.”
Peter Gilmore and Duncan Watt each won two events for the Panthers with Gilmore taking home first place in the mile and 800-meter races and Watt winning the triple jump and high hurdles.
Also on the track, Travis Wright won the two-mile run for Whitman-Hanson and fellow senior Brendan McDonough remained undefeated in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a career best time of 43.7 seconds.
In the field events, James won the high jump while fellow junior Will Forbes finished first in the discus and senior JR Manetta won the shot put for the first time in his varsity career with a 40’ to beat Plymouth South.
Black said that the combination of veterans and underclassmen led to impressive wins over teams that had traditionally been tough league opponents.
“Two years ago, Plymouth South had us in a tight squeeze, matching the Panthers event for event in a very close track meet that the Panthers eventually hung on to win and last year, Sandwich distance runners were winning the 800 meter and two-mile events in a meet the Panthers eventually won,” he said. “This year, the meet was a simple blowout for the Panthers.”
In their second ACL dual meet, it was James who worked his way into the Whitman-Hanson record books.
James poses under the bar after breaking Dennis Nash’s 15-year-old high jump record.
The junior finished the high jump event with a personal best of 6’5 3/4” to break the old record of 6’5” set by former track standout Dennis Nash that stood for 15 years.
“Noel is a tremendous talent,” said Black. Black said that, as a junior, if James is willing to give the same level of commitment to track that Nash had in the mid 90’s, he is not done breaking records.
“When he commits to the higher levels of work in practice similar to our current distance runners or past greats like Dennis Nash, and when he learns how to handle the pressure in a State meet when a championship is on the line, the sky is the limit.”
Jeff Smith, Alex Perrotta, Kevin Gilmore and Travis Wright all had career bests in the meet, finishing first in the javelin, 400-meter, 800-meter and mile run respectively while Watt finished with his best time of the season in the 300 hurdles.
The Panthers also got individual first place finishes from Peter Gilmore in the two-mile, Darren Cundari in the 100-meter dash, and Gary Somers in the 200-meters. The 4x400 relay team of Smith, Perrotta, Brendan Sartori and Pat Egan also finished first.
“This was a good tune up meet for the team as they prepare for the Andover Invitational this Saturday,” Black said. “Andover will be a great test for some of our guys who have hopes of high state level finishes. We will see the very elite of the state.”
